Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia got off to a flying start when they defeated Vietnam 3-1 in their first match in the preliminary round of the Piala Axiata 2014 at the Britama Arena in Jakarta Thursday.
First singles Chong Wei Feng, the world number 32, showed the way by beating Nguyen Hoang Nam 21-13 and 21-17.
However, national junior Ho Yen Mei found Vu Thi Trang, world number 51, too hot to handle and went down in 19-21 and 13-21.
Malaysia’s second point was secured by men’s doubles Hoon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong who had to work hard to overcome Dao Manh Thang-Le Ha Anh but prevailed in the end in 21-17 and 21-18.
Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Ng Hui Lin then dispatched Duong Bao Duc-Dang Kim Ngan in straight sets of 21-16 and 21-13 to seal victory for Malaysia.
