Kuala Lumpur: World number 5 Tommy Sugiarto and Daren Liew who are representing Puchong United BC at the Kopiko Purple League, led their team to a dominating win over Kajang BC with a final score of 18-5 on Thursday.
Tommy Sugiarto didn’t face any real resistance from Wong Kin Yik of Kajang BC as he won the first men’s singles match 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 in 25 minutes. Victories from Lim Chiew Sien (women’s singles), Agripinna Prima/Fran Kurniawan (men’s doubles), Wong Fai Yin/Woon Khe Wei (mixed doubles) combined to give the Puchong United BC a 12-3 lead.
Due to player shortage, barely 3 hours after his arrival from Jakarta around noon time, Daren Liew who helped Malaysia to score a semi-final berth at Axiata Cup on Wednesday, was forced to play against Bong Guang Yik in the afternoon. Fortunately, Daren Liew managed to outclass his opponent with 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 to claim an easy straight set win in his Purple League debut.
Finally, Tan Aik Quan-Yew Hong Kheng added three more points for Puchong after they defeated Ong Soon Hock/Victor Ong Jing Kai 11-5,5-11,11-5,10-11,11-8.
The next tie between Petaling BC and Nusajaya BC was much closer than expected. Petaling BC that spearheaded by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin and Lim Yin Fun, making a hard fight to hold down their opponents that also include top class shuttlers such as world number 17 men’s singles player Boonsak Ponsana from Thailand and men’s doubles player Lim Khim Wah of BAM.
Despite losing the last two matches, Petaling BC hung tough to clinch the tie with final score of 14-10.
