Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s badminton mixed doubles specialist Goh Liu Ying who has not played with her longtime partner Chan Peng Soon since underwent a knee injury in May 2014, hoped to make a comeback at the Kuala Lumpur Open that started on Feb 11.
Seeking to breathe new life and to rejuvenate her mixed doubles career, Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon have resumed her partnership in the ongoing Kuala Lumpur Open. They got off to a slow start on Thursday, but managed to find their touches in the second and third set to defeat second seeds Tan Chee Tean-Shevon Lai Jemie 14-21,21-18,21-16 in the last 16. Goh/Chan will take on Tan Aik Quan/Lee Meng Yean on Friday.
Meanwhile, mixed doubles princess of Malaysia Lai Pei Jing proved she could pair-up with partners of different abilities. Playing with Chooi Kah Ming for the first time, they were able to knock off fourth seeds Tan Wee Gieen/Peck Yen Wei 21-12, 21-13 in 22 minutes.
In men’s singles, Daren Liew who was rumored to be dropped from the Malaysia national team after Morten Frost’s arrival in March, made easy work out of his last 16 match against Nurdini Mohd Said which Daren eventually won 21-10,21-10. He will face the 2013 Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi on Friday. Other interesting men’s singles match-ups on Friday are Mohd Arif Abdul Latif vs Goh Soon Huat, and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin vs Zulfadli Bin Zulkiffli.
