Jakarta: Winning the men’s doubles gold medal and the mixed doubles bronze medal have given Indonesia its renewed confidence of securing at least a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The president of PBSI Gita Wirjawan believed that the Indonesia team is sure going to be a strong contender for gold medals in Rio.
“If we really taking it seriously now, I am very confident of winning gold in 2016 Olympics,” said Wirjawan.
“To be honest, we have plenty of opportunities to win the Olympic gold. Who would have thought that Linda (Linda Weni Fanetri) could win the women’s singles bronze at World Championships? Greysia/Nitya also managed to reach the semi-finals in women’s doubles. Therefore, in addition to the men’s doubles and women’s doubles categories, we have a wide-open chance to win Olympic medals in all five categories,” added Wirjawan.
“Most importantly, athletes and coaches should give their full effort at all levels of practice. It is essential for the shuttlers to work with coaches to take the necessary steps for reaching their goals,” continued Wirjawan.
Except the 2012 London Olympics, Indonesia is the only nation other than China to win at least one gold medal at every Olympics since 1992.
