Leuven: At 15-year old, the world No. 329 Goh Jin Wei from Malaysia has moved into the Belgian International women’s singles final on Friday with a dominating performance, overwhelming 30-year-old American Rong Schafer 21-13, 21-13 in the semi-finals.
The Malaysia’s most promising young badminton star must overcome second seed Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in the final in order to lift her first ever international title. But getting the better of Gilmour on Saturday will be no easy task, given the world No. 31 Scot is no stranger to winning titles in Europe. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, Gilmour won the Polish and Czech Internationals in consecutive weeks and she also took home the Swedish Masters title in March of 2015.
In women’s doubles final, it will be contested between Malaysian pair Joyce Choong Wai Chi/Yap Cheng Wen and Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen of Denmark when both pairs are set to meet for the first time ever on Saturday.
Danish player Christian Lind Thomsen will face compatriot Anders Antonsen in the men’s singles final.
Meanwhile, two Polish doubles pairs managed to make it through to the finals. Robert Mateusiak/Nadiezda Zieba will clash with Jonatan Nordh/Emelie Fabbeke of Sweden in the mixed doubles final, while men’s doubles second seeds Adam Cwalina/Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland will get a chance to topple top seeds Manu Attri/B. Sumeeth Reddy of India in the men’s doubles final.
