Seoul: Rio Olympics silver medalist, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong got off to a perfect start by advancing to the second round of the Korea Open Super Series held at Seong-nam Indoor Stadium in Seoul today.
The fifth seeded pair defeated Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan, 22-20 and 21-14 in the opening match of the men’s doubles, said the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series website.
Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles pair, Hoon Thien How/Teo Kok Siang made it to the second round after a hard fought 21-19, 19-21, 22-20, win over Lee Sang Won/Park Kyung Hoon of South Korea.
National number two singles shuttler, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin also had to sweat before edging Hong Kong’s veteran player, Angus Ng Ka Long; 13-21, 21-14 and 21-17.
However, two other Malaysians, were eliminated from the tournament after losing to their respective opponents.
Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei who made the quarter-final in Rio, put up a stiff resistance against Go Ah Ra/Kim Hyang Im of South Korea before losing, 9-21, 21-13 and 18-21.
Goh Soon Huat also suffered the same fate after losing to Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark; 15-21 and 12-21, in the men’s singles.
Rio Olympics silver medalist, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying who received a bye in the opening round, will take on Kim Duk Young/Kim Hye Rin of South Korea in the second round match of the mixed doubles tomorrow.
Malaysia did not send representatives in the women’s singles of the US$600,000 (RM2.477 million) tournament.
World number one player, Datuk Lee Chong Wei who still fresh from winning his sixth Japan Open Super Series title, withdrew from the tournament to focus on Denmark Open Super Series Premier from Oct 18-23 and French Open Super Series from Oct 25-30.
