Cheras: Going into the knock out stages of 2016/2017 Purple League at Genting Highlands from Feb 9-12, defending champions Muar BC are once again a strong favorite to lift the Purple League title.
The Muar BC finished the regular season with a 7-2 record, and will start their drive for their third consecutive Purple League title straight in the semi-final of the knock out stages (Purple League Champions Challenge).
Unlike last season, where the champions of the inaugural league pocketed a RM 1 million with the runners-up taking home RM400,000 and the team that finished third to bag RM200,000; in this season’s Purple League, the total prize money for the competition which also includes the recently-concluded Junior Purple League, is RM1.5 million. Although the Purple League has said winners of this season will walk away with RM500,000, but it was unclear as whether they were referring to winners of the regular season, or referring to the eventual winners of Purple League Champions Challenge.
Meanwhile, BU Dragons BC who made its first appearance in the Purple League this season, prevailed over Bangsar Hawks 14-2 in the last leg of the regular season on Sunday to claim the second spot on the ranking table. Similar to Muar BC, BU Dragons BC will start their Purple League Champions Challenge directly in the semi-finals.
Only the top six teams will be eligible for the knock out stages, with the top two team going straight through to the semi-finals. 4 other teams that made it to the Purple League Champions Challenge are Puchong United BC, Petaling Jaya BC, Ampang Jaya BC, and Petaling BC.
