The two-time Olympic men’s singles gold medalist wasn’t feeling healthy, as Viktor Axelsen was forced to withdraw after vomiting on the court in the second set and clearly appearing ill.
As a result, it wasn’t Axelsen himself who gave the post-match interview; instead, his coach, Henrik Rohde, provided an update.
“He’s not feeling well. He woke up yesterday and has been unwell. We’ve been trying to improve things and manage it with some food, hoping it would stop.”
“But it wasn’t enough. We just couldn’t hide it,” said Rohde.
Rohde also mentioned that during the warm-up, Axelsen felt he was ready to start the match, but things went wrong as his heart rate increased.
“It’s just extremely unfortunate. It’s disappointing. We are truly upset about it.”
Axelsen retired with the score of 19-21, 7-11 to Alex Lanier of France.
Malaysia’s World No. 17 mixed doubles pair – Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing lost to World No. 6 Kim Won Ho and Jeong Na Eun 21-16, 18-21, 16-21 on Thursday.
