Shenzhen: Anders Antonsen makes history as the first Danish men’s singles champion at the China Masters
Since the tournament’s inception in 2005, Anders Antonsen has become the first Danish player to win the men’s singles title at the China Masters. The 2024 BWF Super 750 men’s singles final featured a clash between Denmark’s World No. 3 Anders Antonsen and Indonesia’s World No. 6 Jonatan Christie, both vying for their first title at this event.
Highlights of Anders Antonsen vs. Jonatan Christie in the 2024 China Masters final:
Antonsen emerged victorious, defeating Jonatan 21-15, 21-13, ending his two-match losing streak against the Indonesian. In their 10th encounter, Antonsen secured his fourth win in the rivalry.
This victory marks Antonsen’s fifth title of the year, adding to his triumphs at the Malaysia Open (Super 1000), Denmark Open (Super 750), Indonesia Masters (Super 500), and the European Championships.
It is also Antonsen’s second title in China, following his win at the 2020 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.
For Jonatan, this loss denied him the chance to become the second Indonesian men’s singles player to win this tournament since Sony Dwi Kuncoro in 2006. It also leaves him short of claiming his third title this year.
In men’s doubles final, the South Korean pair Seo Seung Jae and Jin Yong, clinched the men’s doubles title at the China Masters Super 750, despite being a newly formed team. Ranked World No. 263, they triumphed 21-16, 21-16 against Indonesia’s World No. 13 pair, Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Mohammad Reza Isfahani, to claim their first title together.
On their path to victory, the left-handed duo defeated several strong opponents, including Indonesia’s former World No. 1 Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, Japan’s former world champions Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, and India’s former World No. 1 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
Seo, who won the world championship last year with his previous partner Kang Min Hyuk (who is currently serving the Korean military service), teamed up with Jin Yong for the first time last week at the Kumamoto Super 500 tournament, where they reached the quarterfinals.
This title ends an eight-year drought for South Korean men’s doubles at the China Masters. The last Korean pair to win the title was former World No. 1 Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong.
