Kuala Lumpur – March 24, 2025 — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has officially decided to temporarily rest Malaysia’s top-ranked mixed doubles duo, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, following a recent dip in form and growing internal tension.
The announcement was made by national mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto at BAM’s headquarters earlier Monday. As a result, the World No. 4 pair will not participate in the upcoming 2025 Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, China, scheduled from April 8 to 13.
“Their partnership hasn’t been as strong lately, especially after their early exit at the All England. I’ve assessed the situation and recommended the rest period, which has been approved by BAM’s senior management,” Widianto said.
Chemistry Issues Prompt Break
The duo’s rocky dynamics were thrust into the spotlight after a shock first-round exit at the prestigious All England tournament. Their off-court chemistry is now being seen as a major factor affecting their performance.
“They are not in the right mental space to compete in a tournament as demanding as BAC. I’ve spoken to them both and advised them to reflect on past mistakes. We’ll reassess the situation after the BAC,” Widianto added.
Still in the Sudirman Cup Squad
Despite the hiatus, Chen and Toh are still expected to represent Malaysia in the upcoming Sudirman Cup at the end of April, a team event where national pride is on the line.
“The Sudirman Cup is about playing for the country. We’ve included them in the initial squad. But we’ll continue to evaluate their progress,” said Widianto.
The coach also acknowledged that high public and internal expectations have contributed to the pair’s recent struggles. He didn’t rule out a temporary split if their performance and relationship do not improve.
