Beijing: China’s badminton legend and Olympic gold medalist Cai Yun has officially been appointed Vice Dean of the newly launched Coaching Institute at Shanghai University of Sport, marking a major career milestone for the former World Champion.

According to the university’s official announcement, the 45-year-old legend—once a dominating force on the world stage—will now play a critical role in developing China’s next generation of elite sports coaches.

🥇 From Badminton Champion to Academic Leader

Cai Yun, once a fierce singles player in his youth, found his true success in men’s doubles. In 2003, after teaming up with Fu Haifeng, they formed the legendary “Feng-Yun Pair.”

Together, they rewrote history:

  • 🏆 4x World Champions (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011)

  • 🥇 2012 London Olympic Gold Medalists

  • 🥈 2008 Beijing Olympic Silver Medalists

  • 🏆 2005 All England Champions, ending a 14-year title drought for China in men’s doubles

  • 🎯 First pair in history to win four World Championship men’s doubles titles

After retiring in 2016 following a 19-year career with China’s national team, Cai Yun stayed deeply involved in badminton. He ran training camps, served as a TV analyst, taught at Nanjing Sports Institute, and later moved to Shanghai University of Sport in 2021 to begin his teaching journey.

🎓 Elevating China’s Coaching System

The Coaching Institute, officially launched on June 28, 2025, aims to support high-performance sports in China by nurturing world-class coaches across disciplines. Cai Yun’s appointment as Vice Dean is a strategic move, given his deep experience at the highest level of the sport and his proven dedication to education.

This transition from elite athlete to coach educator positions Cai Yun as a bridge between China’s glorious badminton past and its future ambitions.

🔥 Fans React

Badminton fans across China have welcomed the news, hoping Cai Yun’s leadership will inspire a new era of success for China’s men’s doubles scene. His journey from “being coached” to “coaching the coaches” is seen as an inspiring full-circle moment in the sport.
