KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s hopes of witnessing an all-Malaysian men’s doubles final at the 2026 Malaysia Masters were dashed after Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King suffered a semi-final defeat at Arena Unifi, Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

The world No. 16 Malaysian pair went down 19-21, 17-21 to Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in a closely contested 49-minute encounter.

The defeat ended Wan Arif and Roy King’s unbeaten record against the Danish combination after previously winning all four of their earlier meetings.

As a result, Malaysia’s hopes now rest solely on professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who advanced to the men’s doubles final earlier in the day.

Wan Arif-Roy King Push Hard but Denmark Prevail

The Malaysian pair fought strongly throughout the opening game and stayed within touching distance before eventually losing 19-21.

In the second game, Wan Arif and Roy King briefly looked capable of forcing a decider after moving ahead 15-13.

However, Lundgaard and Vestergaard responded with greater composure during the closing stages, leveling the score before taking control with several key attacking points to seal the match 21-17.

The Danish pair’s disciplined net play and fast counterattacks proved decisive as they booked a place in the final.

Wan Arif Apologizes to Malaysian Fans

Speaking after the match, Wan Arif apologized to Malaysian supporters for not being able to deliver an all-Malaysian final.

“First of all, I want to apologize to all the fans because we couldn’t win this match,” said Wan Arif.

“We really wanted to win, but our opponents played better today. After the match, we discussed that maybe our physical energy had started to drop during the game.”

He added that the pair now hopes to recover quickly ahead of next week’s Singapore Open.

“Hopefully we can regain our energy and come back stronger in Singapore next week,” he said.

Early Nerves and Fatigue Proved Costly

Roy King admitted the pair struggled with tension early in the match before eventually finding their rhythm.

“I think we were a little nervous during the first part of the opening game,” said Roy King.

“After that things became better, but in the second game many of our attacks didn’t work well and physically we started feeling more tired.”

Despite the disappointment, the Malaysian duo still produced one of their best tournament runs of the season.

Unexpected Semi-final Run After Injury Concern

Wan Arif also revealed that the pair did not expect to reach the semi-finals after he only received late clearance to compete due to injury concerns.

“Honestly, we never thought about reaching the semi-finals because I only got approval to play at the last minute after passing my medical test last week,” he explained.

“But after seeing the draw, we felt we had a chance to go far. At the same time, we also needed to be careful not to worsen the injury.”

“Alhamdulillah, in the end we still managed to reach the semi-finals,” he added.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Carry Malaysia’s Final Hopes

Earlier on Saturday, Malaysia’s remaining men’s doubles representatives Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani secured their place in the final after defeating national teammates Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-18, 21-12.

The professional pair will now face Lundgaard and Vestergaard in Sunday’s final as they chase another major title this season.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin already captured the Indonesia Masters crown earlier this year and now have the opportunity to add the Malaysia Masters title in front of home supporters.

Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles Strength Continues to Impress

Although the dream of another all-Malaysian final did not materialize, the tournament once again highlighted Malaysia’s impressive depth in men’s doubles badminton.

With multiple pairs consistently reaching the latter stages of major tournaments, Malaysia remains one of the strongest men’s doubles nations in world badminton.
