Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has announced the appointment of Indonesian coaching legend Herry Iman Pierngadi, better known as Herry IP, as the new head coach of Malaysia’s men’s doubles team. Herry will officially assume the role on February 1 under a four-year contract, guiding the national squad through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The position opened following the departure of current head coach Tan Bin Shen, who will step down after the Malaysia Open concludes on January 13. BAM made the announcement during a council meeting held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Proven Track Record in Developing World-Class Talent
Herry IP is a household name in badminton, renowned for his success in producing world and Olympic champions for Indonesia. Among his illustrious protégés are Olympic gold medalists Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya, Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido, and top-ranked pairs like Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Herry’s wealth of experience is expected to bolster Malaysia’s bid to achieve their elusive Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles 2028.

A Strategic Start
BAM Acting President V. Subramaniam emphasized that Herry’s initial focus will be on evaluating the players and coaching staff under his charge.
“The coach needs time to assess the players’ strengths, weaknesses, and the current training structure. We don’t want him to rush into implementing changes. He’ll need at least 10 days to come up with a clear plan,” Subramaniam said during a press conference.

Collaboration with Rexy Mainaky
ABM’s coaching director, Rexy Mainaky, himself a former Olympic gold medalist, has a long-standing relationship with Herry. He expressed confidence in Herry’s ability to elevate Malaysia’s men’s doubles players, including Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, the 2022 World Champions and current world number six.

“Herry has a proven track record, and I’ve known him since my playing days. He is eager to work with Aaron and Wooi Yik and explore ways to improve their game,” Rexy said.

Aiming for Olympic Glory
Herry’s appointment signals Malaysia’s determination to secure their first-ever Olympic gold medal in badminton. With his experience and strategic approach, BAM is optimistic about the future of Malaysia’s men’s doubles program.

The journey begins in February, as Herry IP sets out to identify the gaps and strengthen the national squad to compete at the highest level on the road to Los Angeles 2028.
