Saarbrücken, Germany, October 28, 2026: Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing continued their impressive European campaign with a comfortable opening-round victory at the 2026 HYLO Open on Wednesday, while men’s doubles pair Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King also advanced to the last 16.

Fresh from finishing runners-up at the French Open on Sunday, Hoo and Lai defeated the Netherlands’ Joep Strooper and Sterre Bang 21-13, 21-13 in just 25 minutes at Saarlandhalle.

Meanwhile, Aaron and Roy King needed only 28 minutes to overcome Germany’s Malik Bourakkadi and Kenneth Neumann 21-11, 21-12, giving Malaysia another encouraging result at the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament.

Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing Continue Strong Form at HYLO Open

World No. 24 Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing entered the HYLO Open with confidence after reaching the French Open mixed doubles final just three days earlier.

Facing the Netherlands’ world No. 182 combination Joep Strooper and Sterre Bang, the Malaysians controlled the opening game to win 21-13.

The Dutch pair offered stronger resistance early in the second game, but Hoo and Lai maintained their advantage and secured another 21-13 victory to complete the match in 25 minutes.

The result extended the Malaysians’ positive run across the European tournaments, following a semifinal appearance at the Denmark Open and a runner-up finish at the French Open.

In Paris, they reached the championship match before losing 10-21, 13-21 to China’s world No. 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping.

Hoo-Lai Reach Two Finals Within Six Months of Partnership

Hoo and Lai’s recent results reflect the progress they have made since forming their mixed doubles partnership approximately six months ago.

The independent Malaysian pair have already reached two finals together, finishing runners-up at the China Masters in September and the French Open in October.

The HYLO Open marks their fourth consecutive tournament following appearances at the Arctic Open, Denmark Open and French Open.

They will next face the winners of the first-round match between Innocenzo Santoro and Chequeda De Boulet, representing Italy and Trinidad and Tobago respectively, and Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang.

A victory in Thursday’s second round would send the Malaysians into the HYLO Open quarterfinals.

Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King Defeat German Pair in 28 Minutes

Malaysia’s Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King also made a convincing start to their HYLO Open campaign, defeating Germany’s Malik Bourakkadi and Kenneth Neumann 21-11, 21-12.

The world No. 74 Malaysian pair needed just 28 minutes to overcome their world No. 63 opponents in the men’s doubles first round.

Aaron and Roy King established their advantage with a 21-11 opening-game victory before completing the match 21-12 in the second.

The result comes three weeks after the Malaysians captured the Arctic Open Super 500 title in Vantaa, Finland, their first championship since being reunited following changes introduced by Malaysia’s men’s doubles coach Herri Iman Pierngadi.

However, their subsequent European appearances proved less successful, with second-round exits at both the Denmark Open and French Open.

Wednesday’s victory gives the pair another opportunity to build on their Arctic Open success.

Potential Indonesian Challenge Awaits Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King

Aaron and Roy King will face either Indonesia’s top-seeded Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani or England’s Alex Green and Zach Russ in Thursday’s second round.

The English combination entered the tournament ranked world No. 40, while the Indonesian pair are among the leading men’s doubles teams on the BWF World Tour.

For Aaron and Roy King, reaching the quarterfinals would represent an improvement on their previous two tournament appearances.

With both Malaysian combinations advancing in straight games, the HYLO Open has provided an encouraging start for the country’s doubles representatives.
