Jakarta: Indonesia’s men’s singles star Jonatan Christie has expressed confidence that the national team can successfully navigate the group stage of the Thomas Cup 2026, following a favorable draw that places them in Group D alongside France, Thailand, and Algeria.

The prestigious badminton team tournament will take place in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3, with Indonesia once again aiming to reclaim the title and add to its rich legacy in the competition.

Balanced Confidence Ahead of Group Stage

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Jonatan — widely known as “Jojo” — acknowledged that while Indonesia has a strong chance of finishing top of the group, the team cannot afford to underestimate its opponents.

“On paper, France looks strong in doubles, while Thailand is very competitive in singles. It could be close, but we remain optimistic about our chances,” he said.

Jojo emphasized that despite the increasingly competitive nature of international badminton, Indonesia’s squad has the quality to perform under pressure and deliver consistent results.

France and Thailand Pose Real Threats

France enters the tournament with growing confidence after winning the 2026 European Men’s Team Championships, where they defeated Denmark 3-2 in the final.

The French squad features a new generation of talent, including Christo Popov, Toma Junior Popov, and Alex Lanier, all of whom have shown significant progress on the international stage.

In doubles, France also brings strong combinations, including the pairing of Popov and Thom Gicquel, making them a well-rounded opponent.

Thailand, meanwhile, will rely heavily on men’s singles star Kunlavut Vitidsarn, supported by Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul, who has steadily climbed into the world’s top 30.

In doubles, the experience of Dechapol Puavaranukroh adds another layer of threat, particularly in tight match situations.

Indonesia’s Strength Lies in Squad Depth

Despite the challenges, Indonesia’s biggest advantage lies in its balanced squad, which combines experienced players with emerging young talent.

The team is led by seasoned names such as Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Fajar Alfian, and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, alongside doubles specialists like Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.

At the same time, younger players including Alwi Farhan, Moh Zaki Ubaidillah, Raymond Indra, and Nikolaus Joaquin bring fresh energy and unpredictability to the lineup.

“With the level of competition becoming more even globally, any team can win on a given day,” Jojo noted. “But I believe our mix of senior and junior players gives us a strong foundation.”

Chasing a Historic Legacy

Indonesia remains the most successful nation in Thomas Cup history, having won the title 14 times since the tournament’s inception in 1958.

The team’s dominance spans multiple eras, from early victories in the 1960s to a golden period in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Their most recent triumph came in the 2020 edition (held in 2021), where Indonesia defeated China 3-0 in the final.

However, recent editions have seen new champions emerge, with India winning in 2022 and China reclaiming the title in 2024 — a sign of the increasingly competitive global badminton landscape.

Eyes Set on Reclaiming the Title

As the tournament approaches, Jonatan Christie remains focused on the bigger goal — bringing the Thomas Cup back to Indonesia.

“We want to continue that tradition and fight for the title again this year,” he said.

With a favorable group draw, a balanced squad, and strong motivation, Indonesia enters the Thomas Cup 2026 as one of the teams to watch.

For badminton fans, Group D promises exciting matchups, with Indonesia, France, and Thailand all capable of producing high-quality performances as they battle for a place in the knockout stage.
