Sydney: Lee Zii Jia’s Australia Open campaign came to an early end after the Malaysian professional men’s singles player was beaten in the first round in Sydney on Wednesday.
The 2024 Australia Open champion was unable to build on the momentum he had created during qualifying, falling to Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hao 13-21, 22-24 in 46 minutes.
Lee Zii Jia, currently ranked world No. 64, had worked hard to reach the main draw after coming through two qualifying matches. However, the former champion could not find his best rhythm against Lee Chia Hao, who is ranked world No. 34.
The opening game proved difficult for Zii Jia, as he struggled to settle into the match and quickly found himself under pressure. Chia Hao controlled the rallies more effectively and took the first game 21-13.
Zii Jia responded with a stronger fight in the second game. He stayed closer on the scoreboard and pushed the contest into the closing stages, giving himself a chance to force a deciding game.
However, Chia Hao remained steadier during the key points. Despite Zii Jia’s late resistance, the Taiwanese player held firm to win 24-22 and end the Malaysian’s run at the Super 500 badminton tournament.
Wong Ling Ching Survives 75-Minute Thriller
Malaysia had better news in women’s singles, where Wong Ling Ching showed strong fighting spirit to move into the second round of the Australia Open.
The world No. 34 Malaysian battled for 75 minutes before defeating India’s Aakarshi Kashyap 21-19, 19-21, 22-20 in a tense opening-round match.
Ling Ching had to work hard from start to finish, with both players refusing to give away easy points. After taking the first game 21-19, the Malaysian was pushed into a deciding game when Kashyap responded by winning the second 21-19.
The final game was just as tight, but Ling Ching stayed composed when it mattered most. She edged the closing points 22-20 to keep Malaysia’s women’s singles challenge alive in Sydney.
Huang Yu-Hsun Awaits in Second Round
Ling Ching will face a tougher test in the second round, where she is scheduled to meet Taiwan’s Huang Yu-Hsun.
Huang, the eighth seed and world No. 31, will provide another strong challenge for the Malaysian, especially after Ling Ching’s demanding first-round battle.
Still, the win over Kashyap should give Ling Ching confidence as she looks to extend her run at the Australia Open.
Eogene Ewe Falls to Lee Cheuk Yiu
Malaysia’s men’s singles challenge also suffered another setback when Eogene Ewe was eliminated in the first round.
The world No. 77 Malaysian lost to Hong Kong’s eighth seed Lee Cheuk Yiu despite taking the opening game. Eogene started well but eventually went down 18-21, 21-10, 21-15.
After winning the first game, Eogene was unable to maintain his level as Lee Cheuk Yiu responded strongly in the second and third games to complete the comeback.
Mixed Day for Malaysia at Australia Open
It was a mixed day for Malaysian badminton at the Australia Open. Lee Zii Jia’s first-round defeat was a disappointing result, especially after his effort to qualify for the main draw as a former champion.
However, Wong Ling Ching’s gritty victory gave Malaysia a positive storyline in women’s singles. Her ability to survive a long and demanding match could be important as she prepares for a difficult second-round clash.
With the tournament still underway, Malaysian badminton fans will now look to Ling Ching and the remaining national representatives to continue the challenge in Sydney.
