Markham, Canada: Lee Zii Jia will get an immediate chance to respond at the Canada Open when he faces India’s Kidambi Srikanth for the second straight week.

The BWF World Tour Super 300 badminton tournament begins in Markham, Ontario, with Lee drawn against Srikanth in the opening round of the men’s singles main draw. The matchup comes just days after Srikanth defeated the Malaysian professional player at the US Open.

At last week’s US Open, Lee, ranked world No. 65, lost to world No. 38 Srikanth 14-21, 13-21 in the second round. Srikanth went on to reach the final before falling to Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang.

Now, the Canada Open gives Lee a quick rematch and another opportunity to test where his game stands after a difficult run on the BWF World Tour.

Lee Zii Jia Looking for Response in Canada

Lee has been working to rebuild his rhythm after dealing with fitness concerns and inconsistent results this season.

The Olympic men’s singles bronze medalist and former Asian champion has played nine World Tour events this year. Across those tournaments, he has suffered six first-round exits and two second-round defeats, while also falling in the second round of qualifying at the Orleans Masters in March.

That record makes the Canada Open especially important for Lee. A strong result in Markham would help him restore confidence and change the direction of a season that has so far been short on momentum.

Despite his recent struggles, Lee still holds the advantage in his career rivalry with Srikanth. The two have met eight times, with Lee leading the head-to-head record 5-3.

However, Srikanth’s straight-game win at the US Open showed that the Indian player is currently in sharp form. For Lee, the challenge will be to start faster, reduce errors, and bring more consistency into the longer rallies.

Possible Second-Round Opponent for Lee

If Lee can overcome Srikanth in the first round, he could face either Canada’s Joshua Nguyen or Chinese Taipei’s Liao Jhuo-Fu in the second round.

Nguyen is ranked world No. 87, while Liao sits at world No. 63. Both players would offer different types of tests, but Lee’s immediate focus will be on solving the Srikanth challenge after last week’s defeat.

For Malaysian badminton fans, the opening-round match will be one of the key badminton news stories from the Canada Open, especially because it gives Lee a direct chance to answer his US Open loss.

Cheam June Wei, Huan Kai Hern and Kok Jing Hong Begin in Qualifying

Lee will lead Malaysia’s independent men’s singles challenge in Canada, while three other Malaysian players will begin their campaigns in the qualifying rounds.

World No. 73 Cheam June Wei will open against Canada’s Yanqing Wang, while world No. 133 Huan Kai Hern faces Italy’s Fabio Caponio.

Kok Jing Hong, ranked world No. 102, will meet Japan’s Koo Takahashi in his first qualifying match.

For all three players, the Canada Open offers a chance to gain ranking points, build match confidence, and try to join Lee in the main draw.

Canada Open Men’s Singles Draw Gains Attention

The Canada Open may be a Super 300 event, but the men’s singles draw still carries several interesting storylines.

The Lee Zii Jia-Kidambi Srikanth rematch stands out because of the timing. Meeting again one week after the US Open gives Lee no time to dwell on the defeat, but it also gives him a clear target.

If he can reverse the result, it would be an important step in rebuilding his confidence. If Srikanth wins again, Lee’s difficult season will face more scrutiny.

For now, the focus is simple: Lee Zii Jia has another chance to prove himself in Canada, and badminton fans will be watching closely to see whether he can respond.
