Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Professional men’s singles star Lee Zii Jia has outlined several conditions to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) before confirming whether he will represent the country at the upcoming Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark (April 24 – May 3).

The update was revealed by BAM Performance Committee chairman Lee Chong Wei following a recent meeting with the former All England champion at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara.

According to Lee Chong Wei, the 27-year-old has requested approximately one week to finalize his decision, with a definitive response expected by Friday.

“There were several terms discussed and we have provided our feedback. I have also spoken with the BAM president and council members. We now have a new management structure and we are evaluating what can be offered,” Lee Chong Wei said.

Revisiting Past Controversy

The discussion inevitably brought back memories of the Thomas Cup 2024 edition in Chengdu, where reports surfaced that Lee Zii Jia’s camp had sought image rights compensation for representing the national team. The matter sparked mixed reactions within the badminton community, highlighting the evolving relationship between professional players and national federations.

While opinions remain divided, the latest meeting was described as smooth and constructive.

Time Factor Critical for Malaysia

Lee Chong Wei emphasized that timing is crucial, as Malaysia must finalize its squad and training program before submitting the official team list to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in April.

“We hope he can respond soon because we need to confirm the player list and training arrangements,” he said.

Malaysia is expected to name four men’s singles players and three doubles pairs for the prestigious team badminton championship.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Singles Lineup

Should Lee Zii Jia accept the invitation, his presence would significantly reinforce Malaysia’s singles department. He could potentially feature as the second or third singles option, providing tactical depth and balance in high-pressure team ties.

“If he joins the squad, the team becomes stronger. He can play as second or third singles, giving us better balance,” Lee Chong Wei added.

BAM remains committed to finding common ground in order to assemble the strongest possible badminton squad for the Thomas Cup.

“This requires careful discussion for this year’s Thomas Cup. We hope he understands the current situation so we can reach the best solution for the team,” he said.
