Hong Kong – Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao is into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Hong Kong Open after a hard-fought victory over compatriot Justin Hoh in a thrilling second-round match at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

In a battle between the world No. 23 and No. 39, Leong broke a two-match losing streak against Hoh, finally prevailing 21-11, 15-21, 21-18 after 66 minutes of intense badminton action.

This win marks the first time Leong has defeated Hoh in international play and sets up a quarter-final clash with China’s Li Shifeng, who earlier beat Japan’s Koki Watanabe 21-12, 21-19.

Pearly Tan and Thinaah Storm Into Women’s Doubles Quarters

Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, booked their quarter-final spot with a confident 21-18, 21-17 win over Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari.

They will now face fellow Malaysians Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing, who also advanced after a gritty two-game win over Taiwanese pair Hsu Ya Ching/Sung Yu-Hsuan , 21-19, 21-18.


Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Suffer Third Straight Early Exit

Things didn’t go as planned for Malaysia’s third-ranked men’s doubles team Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who fell to Taiwan’s Lee Fang Chih and Lee Fang Jen despite winning the first game.

Final score: 21-14, 16-21, 13-21 in 46 minutes, marking their third consecutive early-round exit after losses at the China Open and the World Championships.

Taiwan’s world No. 22 pair now hold two wins from nine meetings with the Malaysians, both wins coming on Hong Kong soil.


Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King Continue to Impress

In another all-Malaysian men’s doubles match, Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King delivered a composed performance to defeat Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal 21-17, 21-19.

Arif and Roy King will next face Indian power duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in what promises to be a fiery quarter-final showdown.


Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin Beat Fellow Malaysians to Reach Mixed Doubles Quarters

In mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin overcame Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie in three games: 21-10, 14-21, 21-16.

The win improves their head-to-head record to 2-1 against their more experienced teammates and propels them into the last eight.
