Paris, France — Malaysia has secured at least one spot in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the 2025 Badminton World Championships, with two national pairs scheduled to face each other in the Round of 16 in Paris.

2022 world champions and World No. 2 pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik will meet their fellow countrymen Wan Arif Wan Junaidi/Yap Roy King in a highly anticipated all-Malaysian showdown at the Adidas Arena.

Chia and Soh displayed clinical form to beat Scotland’s Grimley brothers — Christopher and Matthew — 21-15, 21-16 in just 33 minutes to book their place in the next round.

Meanwhile, Wan Arif/Yap Roy King stunned World No. 12 Thai pair Kittinupong Kedren/Dechapol Puavaranukroh with a commanding 21-13, 21-17 win. This victory adds more sparkle to their debut appearance at the World Championships.

The two Malaysian pairs previously met at the Thailand Open in May, where Chia and Soh prevailed.


👫 Mixed Doubles Update:

Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei cruised through their opening round with a dominant 21-16, 21-11 victory over India’s Rohan Kapoor/Ruthvika Shivani Gadde.

They now face a tougher challenge in Round of 16 against Indonesia’s World No. 11 duo Jafar Hidayatullah/Ferisha Pasaribu, who have been in top form this season.

In another mixed doubles match, an all-Malaysian showdown is set as Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin will face off against Goh Soon Huat/Lai Shevon Jemie next.

In another tense battle, World No. 3 Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin were forced to dig deep against the USA’s Chen Zhi Yi/Presley Smith, eventually winning 19-21, 21-10, 21-17. They will next face Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-Huei/Yang Po-Hsuan.


💪 Women’s Doubles Consistency:

Top Malaysian women’s pair Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan also advanced to the third round, defeating Lui Lok Lok/Tsang Hiu Yan of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-14 in a solid performance.

Despite their goal of winning gold, Thinaah emphasized that their focus remains on consistency and enjoying the journey:

“Of course, everyone dreams of winning gold, but our priority is to stay consistent, enjoy the process, and give our best every time we step on court,” she told BWF.

They will next face Indonesia’s Lanny Tria Mayasari/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.


😢 Leong Jun Hao Falls Short:

On the men’s singles side, Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao bowed out in the second round after a hard-fought match against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, losing 17-21, 21-13, 23-25.

Despite leading in the third set, Leong Jun Hao couldn’t close it out:

“I’m disappointed. I started well in the decider but couldn’t maintain the momentum. I gave everything but fell short,” he told BWF.
