Changzhou: The Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, pulled off a surprise victory by defeating the World Champions from South Korea, Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae, in the second round of the 2024 China Open.
The world’s 13th-ranked pair beat the world’s 4th-ranked Koreans 21-18, 21-19, advancing to the quarterfinals at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou China.

In the quarterfinals, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun will face fellow Malaysians, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani, who overcame Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King 21-14, 25-23.
Man Wei Chong expressed joy after the win, mentioning that improved communication between them enhanced their performance.
However, Malaysia’s top mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei fell short in their match against Indonesia’s Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanualle Widjaya, losing 15-21, 21-13, 9-21.
The Indonesian pair will now face Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin in the quarterfinals, who defeated Yap Roy King and Valeree Siow 21-9, 21-15 in the second round.
Additionally, Malaysia’s other mixed doubles pair, Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing were eliminated after losing to Denmark’s Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund 18-21, 18-21.
In the women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah were also knocked out after losing to China’s Li Yi Jing and Luo Xu Min 16-21, 18-21 in the second round.
In men’s doubles, the professional pair Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi registered their third win over Taiwanese twins Lee Fang Chih and Lee Fang Jen, advancing to the quarterfinals after a straight-set win of 21-19, 21-14. They will next face Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
In other matches, Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin knocked out China’s No. 1 seeds Wang Chang and Liang Wei Keng and will next play Denmark’s Rasmus Kjær and Frederik Søgaard. Meanwhile, unseeded Anthony Sinisuka Ginting stunned China’s men’s singles No. 1 seed Shi Yu Qi, setting up a quarter-final match with Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
