KUALA LUMPUR — Indonesian badminton star Marcus Fernaldi Gideon made a surprise appearance at the Academy of Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara recently, where he joined a training session with the Malaysian national squad.
The presence of the former world No.1 men’s doubles player immediately energized the training environment, giving Malaysia’s younger players a rare opportunity to spar and learn from one of the most accomplished doubles specialists in modern badminton.

Unexpected Visit During Family Vacation
According to Malaysia national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky, Gideon’s appearance was not part of any planned sparring program.
The Indonesian badminton icon happened to be visiting Malaysia on vacation with his family and requested permission to join the training session simply to stay active.
“Marcus is currently on holiday in Malaysia with his family. He’s the type of player who doesn’t like sitting still — he still wants to sweat and stay sharp,” Rexy said when speaking to reporters at ABM.
Gideon reportedly asked both Rexy Mainaky and men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi if he could take part in training while he was in Kuala Lumpur.
Motivation for Malaysia’s Young Badminton Players
Although Gideon’s participation is expected to be short-term before he continues his vacation in Genting Highlands, Rexy believes the experience is extremely valuable for Malaysia’s younger players.
Even at 35 years old, Gideon remains widely respected across the badminton world for his speed, tactical awareness, and net play that once made him one half of the famous Indonesian duo known as the “Minions.”
“Marcus still has tremendous quality in his game,” Rexy explained.
“I want our young players to take this opportunity to observe him closely, communicate with him, and understand the level of professionalism required to become a world champion.”
A Valuable Learning Opportunity
For many Malaysian players training at ABM, sharing the court with Gideon represents more than just a practice session — it is a chance to witness firsthand the discipline, intensity, and experience of a former world No.1 badminton player.
Moments like these continue to highlight the strong relationships within the international badminton community, where elite players often share knowledge and experience across national teams.
