Kuala Lumpur: In a thrilling three-game showdown, China’s Shi Yuqi shattered Denmark’s world number one, Viktor Axelsen’s hopes for a third consecutive Malaysia Open title on Saturday. Shi Yuqi advanced to the finals of the Malaysia Open, where he is set to compete against another Danish men’s singles player, Anders Antonsen, for the championship.

Highlights of Shi Yuqi vs. Viktor Axelsen in the 2024 Malaysia Open semi-finals:

Shi Yuqi secured his spot in the finals after a 1-hour and 10-minute semi-final match, defeating Axelsen with scores of 21-12, 19-21, and 21-17, altering their head-to-head record to 3 wins and 9 losses.

In the first game, Shi Yuqi dominated the match with precise placements and complete control, easily winning 21-12. Axelsen made numerous uncharacteristic errors in this game. On the contrary, Shi Yuqi showcased delicate touch and excellent placement, securing a victory as expected.

The second game witnessed intense competition, with both players evenly matched. Shi Yuqi maintained his good form, but Axelsen reduced errors and effectively utilized his attacking skill. In crucial moments, Shi Yuqi consecutively hit the ball into the net twice, ultimately losing this game 19-21.

In the deciding game, despite Shi Yuqi initially falling behind, he demonstrated tremendous capabilities to turn the table after a mid-game break. He reversed the deficit through precise net control and strategic tactics, making an 8-1 comeback. In the end, Shi Yuqi secured the deciding game with a score of 21-17, advancing to the finals.

Today’s victory holds significant meaning for Shi Yuqi, marking his second triumph over Axelsen for the second time exactly one month ago at last year’s group stage of the BWF World Tour Finals.

In the earlier semi-final, Anders Antonsen secured a straight-set victory over Lin Chun-Yi with scores of 21-16, 21-7, winning their first encounter. Regardless of whether Shi Yuqi or Anders Antonsen emerges victorious in the men’s singles final on Sunday, it will be their first time claiming the title at the Malaysia Open.

In men’s doubles, Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang will meet Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in the final.
