KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia men’s doubles player Soh Wooi Yik believes the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) presents a tougher challenge compared to many other badminton tournaments because it features many of the world’s strongest players, especially from Asia.

The Malaysian doubles star explained that Asian players, particularly in men’s doubles, have very different playing styles and strengths, making matches more unpredictable and challenging.

Asian Badminton Competition Is Always Tough

Soh Wooi Yik said that competing in Asia is often more difficult, especially in men’s doubles, because every pair has unique strengths and tactical approaches.

He noted that Asian badminton pairs often play fast, tactical, and unpredictable badminton, which requires players to constantly adjust their strategy during matches.

Because of this, matches at the Badminton Asia Championships often require a higher level of focus and tactical awareness compared to some other tournaments that include more European players with different playing styles.

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik Ready for the Challenge

Soh Wooi Yik said he and his partner Aaron Chia believe they can handle the pressure and adapt quickly during matches, even when mistakes happen during high-speed rallies.

He added that consistency has been one of their strengths this season, and they hope to continue building on their recent performances in major badminton tournaments.

Not Thinking About Defending Champion Pressure

Despite entering the tournament as defending champions, Soh Wooi Yik said he is not focusing too much on the pressure of defending the title.

Instead, he believes the focus should be on performance, preparation, and maintaining consistency throughout the season, which includes many major badminton tournaments.

He explained that focusing too much on defending a title can create unnecessary pressure, while focusing on performance and process helps players perform better.

Preparation for Badminton Asia Championships Going Well

Soh Wooi Yik also said their preparation for the Badminton Asia Championships has been going smoothly, as the Malaysian pair has competed in the tournament several times before and understands the level of competition.

He hopes that the momentum from their strong performances earlier this year at the Malaysia Open and the All England can continue into the Badminton Asia Championships.

Malaysia will be hoping that Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik can once again deliver strong results at one of the toughest badminton tournaments of the year.
