Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s top doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan will not defend their titles at the upcoming Thailand Open 2026 badminton tournament as they manage their schedule following the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.

The Thailand Open, a BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament scheduled from May 12 to May 17, comes just nine days after the conclusion of the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals in Denmark. With such a tight turnaround between major badminton tournaments, the Malaysian pairs have decided to withdraw to focus on recovery and preparation for upcoming events.

The decision reflects the increasingly demanding badminton calendar, where top players must carefully manage their fitness, travel, and tournament schedules to maintain peak performance throughout the season.

Malaysia’s men’s doubles former world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik won the Thailand Open title last year, while women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan also captured the title, making them defending champions in this year’s tournament.

However, the players and coaching teams have chosen to prioritize the upcoming series of major tournaments instead of competing in Thailand.

The busy badminton schedule continues with several important tournaments, including the Malaysia Masters (May 19–24), Singapore Open (May 26–31), Indonesia Open (June 1–6), and the Australian Open (June 8–14).

Among these tournaments, the Indonesia Open, a prestigious BWF World Tour Super 1000 event, is expected to be one of the main targets for many top badminton players due to the ranking points and prize money available.

Also choosing to skip the Thailand Open are Malaysia’s world No. 6 men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, who are focusing on preparing for the upcoming major tournaments in the badminton calendar.

With several top Malaysian pairs absent from the Thailand Open, professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will lead Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s doubles event. The world No. 7 pair is expected to be among the strong contenders for the title.

They are likely to face tough competition from India’s world No. 4 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are also considered one of the favorites to win the Thailand Open men’s doubles title.

The Thailand Open remains an important stop on the BWF World Tour, attracting many of the world’s top badminton players despite the packed tournament schedule. The tournament often serves as preparation for bigger Super 750 and Super 1000 tournaments that follow.

As the badminton season becomes more demanding each year, more players are strategically selecting tournaments to ensure they remain healthy and competitive throughout the season, especially with major team events and Olympic qualification cycles becoming increasingly important in the badminton world.

Fans will still be able to watch many top international players compete at the Thailand Open, while Malaysian fans will look forward to seeing Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Pearly Tan-Thinaah return to action in the upcoming Malaysia Masters and other major badminton tournaments in the coming weeks.
