Paris, France: Malaysia is guaranteed a place in the men’s doubles semifinals at the 2026 French Open after Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun joined compatriots Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the quarterfinals of the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament.

Man and Tee earned their place with a 25-23, 21-14 victory over Japan’s eighth seeds Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, while Aaron and Soh advanced after receiving a walkover from Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul.

The two Malaysian combinations will meet on Friday, October 23, with the winner progressing to the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin survived a three-game contest against Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard, earning a quarterfinal against South Korea’s top seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae.

In men’s singles, French players Toma Junior Popov and Alex Lanier both advanced to set up an all-French quarterfinal, while Indonesia’s Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah and Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen also secured places in the last eight.

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun Defeat Former World Champions

Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun delivered one of Malaysia’s most important victories of the day, eliminating Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in straight games.

The opening game was particularly close, with the Malaysians eventually prevailing 25-23 after the score went beyond the regulation 21 points.

Man and Tee then took the second game 21-14 to complete their victory over the eighth-seeded Japanese pair.

The result followed their opening-round comeback against another Japanese combination, Kakeru Kumagai and Hiroki Nishi, whom they defeated 15-21, 21-15, 21-17.

Having overcome two Japanese pairs in successive rounds, Man and Tee now face a different challenge: an all-Malaysian quarterfinal against Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik Advance After Thai Pair Withdraw

Malaysia’s fourth seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik progressed without playing their scheduled second-round match against Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul.

The official draw recorded the result as a walkover in favor of Aaron and Soh. No game scores were recorded.

The Malaysians had opened their French Open campaign with a 21-15, 21-19 victory over China’s He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu.

Aaron and Soh arrived in France after reaching the Denmark Open final last week, where they finished runners-up to Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.

Their next opponents, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, will be familiar faces from Malaysia’s men’s doubles ranks.

All-Malaysian Quarterfinal Guarantees Semifinal Place

Friday’s quarterfinal between Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun ensures that at least one Malaysian men’s doubles pair will reach the French Open semifinals.

The match is scheduled for October 23 on Court 3, with an estimated start time of 5:20 p.m. local time, subject to the preceding matches.

Aaron and Soh enter as the tournament’s fourth seeds, while Man and Tee have already demonstrated their ability to overcome seeded opposition with their victory over Hoki and Kobayashi.

For Malaysian badminton, the meeting guarantees progress in the tournament but also means that one of the country’s leading combinations will be eliminated before the semifinals.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Survive Danish Challenge

Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin also advanced, although their route to the quarterfinals was considerably more demanding.

The sixth seeds defeated Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard 21-6, 14-21, 21-18 in three games.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin dominated the opening game 21-6, but the Danish pair responded by taking the second 21-14.

The deciding game was much closer, with the Malaysians eventually securing a 21-18 victory to keep their French Open campaign alive.

It was their second consecutive three-game victory in Paris, following a 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 opening-round win over Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer.

Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae Await Sze Fei-Izzuddin

Sze Fei and Izzuddin will next meet world No. 1 Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea.

The top seeds advanced with a 21-14, 21-16 victory over Malaysia’s Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King.

Aaron and Yap had arrived in France after winning the Arctic Open earlier in October, but their campaign ended against the leading Korean combination.

Kim and Seo had also defeated Japan’s Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita 21-12, 21-9 in the opening round.

The Korean pair will now face Sze Fei and Izzuddin on October 23, with the match listed on Court 1 at an estimated 7:50 p.m. local time.

Malaysia therefore has three men’s doubles pairs in the French Open quarterfinals, although only two can progress because Aaron/Soh and Man/Tee are drawn against each other.

Toma Junior Popov and Alex Lanier Set Up All-French Quarterfinal

France will also be guaranteed a men’s singles semifinalist after Toma Junior Popov and Alex Lanier won their respective second-round matches.

Popov defeated Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh 21-10, 21-14 to continue his run in front of the home crowd.

He had already produced a significant result in the opening round, overcoming Thailand’s top seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn in three games.

Lanier, seeded seventh and fresh from winning the Denmark Open men’s singles title, defeated Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul 22-20, 21-13.

The opening game was tightly contested, but Lanier prevailed 22-20 before completing the victory with a more comfortable second game.

The two French players will meet in the quarterfinals on October 23, with the match scheduled on Court 1 at an estimated noon start.

Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah Continues Strong Run for Indonesia

Indonesia’s Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah maintained his impressive French Open campaign with a 21-17, 21-14 victory over Japan’s Koki Watanabe.

The Indonesian won both games to advance to the quarterfinals, following his opening-round victory over compatriot Jonatan Christie.

Ubaidillah had defeated Christie 16-21, 21-17, 21-17, making his progress particularly noteworthy after overcoming the established Indonesian star.

His next opponent will be Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen, who also came through a demanding second-round encounter.

Chi Yu Jen Eliminates Fifth Seed Chou Tien Chen

Chi Yu Jen defeated fellow Chinese Taipei player Chou Tien Chen 21-18, 20-22, 21-17 to reach the quarterfinals.

Chi took the opening game 21-18 before fifth seed Chou responded by narrowly winning the second 22-20.

With the match level at one game apiece, Chi recovered to claim the decider 21-17 and complete the victory.

The result eliminated one of the tournament’s seeded men’s singles contenders and set up a quarterfinal against Indonesia’s Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah.

Their match is scheduled for October 23 on Court 2, with an estimated start time of 10:20 a.m. local time.
