Jakarta: Malaysia’s challenge at the Indonesian Open Super Series Badminton Tournament ended after scratch pair Chan Peng Soon/Peck Yen Wei went down to Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia in the semi-finals at the Jakarta Convention Centre on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Rio Olympic silver medalist Chan Peng Soon was paired with 21-year-old Peck Yen Wei after his regular partner Goh Liu Ying is still recovering from a shoulder surgery and knee rehabilitation in Halle, Germany.

Although the unseeded mixed doubles pair from Malaysia was shown the exit by Ahmad/Natsir, losing the semi-match 13-21 and 14-21 in only 39 minutes. Chan/Peck have shown great potential in only their first tournament as a pair by reaching the semi-finals.

Ahmad/Natsir will try to keep at least one title at home on Sunday, as they will square up against top seeds Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen of China in the final. The Chinese pair outlasted compatriots Liu Yuchen/Tang Jinhua 21-10, 21-23 and 21-16 in other semifinal match.

Indonesia offers a total prize of 1 million U.S. dollars, the prize amount is the largest in BWF’s premier badminton tournaments held this year.
