Dubai: Indonesia’s World No. 1 men’s doubles pair Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon received a boost ahead of the 2017 World Superseries Finals after they were awarded “Male Player of the Year” from Badminton World Federation (BWF) at the BWF World Super Series Finals 2017 tournament gala dinner on Tuesday.
The Indonesian pair has enjoyed a successful year with six Superseries titles – All England, India Open, Malaysia Open, Japan Open, China Open, Hong Kong Open – as well as a runners-up at Korea Open and Denmark Open.
Sukamuljo/Gideon attracted the most vote from the BWF Awards Commission ahead of three other nominees – Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, India’s Kidambi Srikanth and China’s Zheng Siwei.
“Frankly, I didn’t expect to win this award, as it usually awarded to the singles player,” said Gideon.
“We are definitely happy to win this award, hopefully this achievement can motivate us to win the Superseries Finals title in Dubai,” added Sukamuljo.
“We have to get better if we would like to win again next year,” said the delighted Gideon.
Meanwhile, Chen Qingchen, the women’s doubles world champion who have won five Superseries this season, took home the Female Player of the Year award.
“It was shocked and extremely honored, I thought Tai Tzu Ying would win the award,” said Chen.
“I am going to keep my momentum next year,” added Chen.
