
Dubai: World No. 2 men’s singles player Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia will meet World No. 5 Son Wan-Ho of Korea in the semi-final of the BWF Super Series Finals after the Malaysian suffered a defeat to the Korean 21-13, 20-22, 15-21 in the last Group A match at the Hamdan Sports Complex on Friday.
Despite his loss, Lee still has the point difference advantage to remain the champion of Group A. With his victory over Lee, Son who lost to Hong Kong player Angus Ng Ka Long on Thursday, barely make the cut to breeze into the semi-finals.
The draw of the semi-finals for all five categories was held at the end of play at the Hamdan Sports Complex Press Conference Room later on Friday, and Lee was drawn to meet Son again for a spot in the final.
In men’s singles Group B, defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark will take on China’s Shi Yuqi on Saturday. It’s going to be a rematch of their second Group B match as Shi defeated Axelsen 13-21, 21-18, 21-17 two days ago in Dubai.
Men’s doubles pairs Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda of Japan and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia have secured themselves the semi-final berths and experienced the same fate as their men’s singles counterpart where they will play their opponents from the same group.
Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan of China are also set to play Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark on Saturday as Liu/Zhang eased past the Denmark pair 21-18, 21-13 in the final Group B match on Friday.
