Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Mohamad Norza Zakaria was hopeful that the nation will be able to achieve a target 3 gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, which will be held from April 4th to April 15th.

“We have suggested a list of players to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (MOM) that will hold the main selection meeting next Monday,” said Zakaria after chairing the Coaching and Training Committee (C&T) at the Malaysian Badminton Academy on Thursday.

BAM has listed five male and five female shuttlers for the Malaysian squad including Lee Chong Wei (men’s singles), Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles), Tan Wee Kiong/Goh V Shem (men’s doubles), Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles), Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing (mixed doubles) and Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei (women’s doubles).

“Every country can only send maximum of five male and female players. The players on this list are compilation of top prospects for each category,” said Zakaria.

In Glasgow Commonwealth Games four years ago, Malaysia won three golds through Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong (male doubles), Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei (doubles women) and the mixed team.

The World No. 2 Lee Chong Wei who won two Commonwealth Games gold at the 2006 (Melbourne) and 2010 (New Delhi) edition, is eyeing for his third, and probably his last gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games.
