Cixi: Although Rio Olympic Chen Long was not in the team this season, there was still strong depth in the Xiamen team to keep the success rolling against Zhejiang in the 2017-2018 China Badminton Super League final.

In the final that was held on Friday, Xiamen’s doubles specialist Zheng Siwei became the hero when he and Liu Cheng produced a thrilling last-gasp victory over Wang Yilyu and Wang Sijie of Zhejiang 21-12, 21-19 to finish off a clean sweep and clinched the championships for their team.

Zheng Siwei had earlier got his team to a great start when he and Chen Qingchen overcame Zhejiang’s Wang Yilyu and Huang Yaqiong 21-16, 21-15 in 35 minutes to score the first point for his team.

Xiamen’s men’s singles player Angus Ng Ka Long extended his team’s advantage to 2-0 after beating Zhejiang’s Huang Yuxiang 21-14, 21-13 in 34 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Qingdao Renzhou team responded against Jiangsu Annier team in a battle for third place on Friday, when the Olympic champion Lin Dan of Qingdao Renzhou team eased past Xu Yiming of Jiangsu Annier team 21-12, 21-7 to lead his team for a 3-0 win over Jiangsu.

The 2017-2018 China Badminton Super League has been considered by many badminton fans as “unattractive” due to its lack of participation by big badminton stars and its sponsorship disputes.
