Jakarta: The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)’s legendary men’s doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi remained confident that the world number one men’s pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya will be included as part of Indonesia’s final Thomas Cup team roster.
PBSI will send four men’s doubles pairs to the 2018 Badminton Asia Championships that will take place at Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium in China from April 24 to April 29, 2018 and Gideon/Sanjaya were exempt from that. Because the newlywed Gideon and his wife were going to enjoy their dream honeymoon during that period.
“The pair has been tested and has proven many times in a lot of big tournaments. I only needed to work on their fitness for now,” said Pierngadi.
“Well, maybe after Gideon got married, his competition spirit would be so so, due to the aftermath from a happy marriage,” added Pierngadi, jokingly.
“Sinyo (Marcus Gideon) will be back to training next week, he wanted to go to Labuan Bajo for his honeymoon first. Meanwhile, Kevin continues to practice as usual,” said Pierngadi.
PBSI has previously named six potential men’s pairs that would compete for three men’s doubles slots in the final Thomas Cup squad.
In addition to Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya, the other five pairs were Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, Berry Angriawan/Hardianto, Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pankaryanira/Ade Yusuf, Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan, and Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro. These are the best men’s pairs in Indonesia currently.
PBSI will evaluate their performances in 2018 Badminton Asia Championships before deciding who they would like to move forward with.
