Muelheim: Malaysia’s No.5 mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying was out the German Open after falling to Evgenij Dremin/Evgenia Dimova of Russia 21-18, 17-21, 15-21 in the opener on Tuesday.

The Rio Olympic mixed doubles silver medalists have only themselves to blame as they failed to capitalize on their 9-1, 12-5 commanding lead in the second game to close out the match.

In addition to Chan/Goh, another Malaysian mixed pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing were also sent packing in the first round losing to Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia 22-20, 18-21, 15-21 in 62 minutes.

However, another Malaysian pair the No. 5 seeds Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai managed to prevail over Takuro Hoki/Wakana Nagahara of Japan, beating the Japanese pair 21-17, 21-19.

Goh/Lai will now go onto face Russia’s Rodion Alimov/Alina Davletova in round two of the BWF World Tour Super 300 event.

In men’s singles competition, Soon Joo Ven who claimed his maiden men’s singles title at the Malaysia national championship last Saturday, defeated compatriot Cheam June Wei 21-9, 21-14 in the second qualifying match to enter the main draw.

Soong will play No. 6 seed Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore who shocked Lin Dan to win the Thailand Masters earlier this year, failed to get past the qualifying round by losing to Thomas Rouxel of France 21-18, 16-21, 14-21 in 67 minutes.

Big names like Lin Dan, Nozomi Okuhara will start their first round matches on Wednesday. Lin will meet his junior teammate Lu Guangzu, while Okuhara will take on Line HøJmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark in her opening match.
