Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) announced some shuffling of its coaching staff on Sunday, by appointing the 2004 Olympic Games bronze medalist, Flandy Limpele of Indonesia as the men’s doubles head coach, and former World No. 1 men’s doubles player Chan Chong Ming as the women’s doubles head coach.

BAM president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said in a statement that Limpele’s selection was based on his success of leading Indian men’s Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy to reach world’s top 10 last year. Limpele will be assisted by Rosman Razak and Hoon Thien How.

Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng who were ranked world’s number one pair on 11 April 2002, will be in charge of Malaysia’s women’s doubles department.

“Former national doubles player Chan Chong Ming will take over as the women’s doubles coach. The two-time World Championships (2001, 2005) bronze medalist will be assisted by Chin Ee Hui and Wong Pei Tty,” added Zakaria.

As expected, the current men’s singles coach Hendrawan has been reunited with Tey Seu Bock. Both of them were very experienced men’s singles coach as they have guided Lee Chong Wei in the London and Rio Olympics respectively.

Meanwhile, Indra Widjaja, who was the assistant to Hendrawan, has been tasked with coaching the women’s singles team with help from Loh Wei Sheng.

BAM’s current men’s doubles coach, Paulus Firman has been reassigned to head the mixed doubles department working alongside Teo Kok Siang.

“I hope the two new coaches will be able to begin their work on June 15. But that is all subject to the Movement Control Order (MCO) whether we will be allowed to start training,” explained Zakaria.

All coaches will be reported to BAM coaching director, Wong Choong Hann.
