Kuala Lumpur: The Rio Olympic silver medalists – Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong weren’t taking anything for granted if they were to be selected to play in the Thomas Cup Finals that will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, from October 3 to October 11, 2020.

Goh V Shem and seven other independent shuttlers checked-in at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) on Tuesday to undergo swab tests for COVID-19 and had to self-isolate for two days before starting their joint training with shuttlers from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Speaking to reporters, Goh V Shem was confident that Malaysia could build a very strong Thomas Cup squad in an effort to bring the prestigious men’s team title back to Malaysia.

“Right now we have Lee Zii Jia for singles and he himself is confident with his ability. We also have a strong men’s doubles pair of Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik who could play in a high level of competition,” said Goh.

“We’ll need to develop strong confidence if we would like to win the Thomas Cup,” added Goh who was happy to return to BAM after leaving the organization in January last year.

Goh and five other shuttlers including Tan Wee Kiong, Daren Liew, Soong Joo Ven, Teo Ee Yi, Ong Yew Sin will be training with BAM shuttlers full-time, while mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying will train with BAM shuttlers twice a week as their focus is to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics next year.
