Jakarta: Indonesia’s badminton legend and the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medalist, Markis Kido, who died of a heart attack in Tangerang, Monday night, at 36, was buried at the Kebon Nanas Public Cemetery (TPU), East Jakarta, Tuesday, where his late father, Djumharbey Anwar was also buried.

The funeral ceremony was attended by his family members, representatives of the Jaya Raya Badminton Club, and former Indonesian badminton players and Olympic champions – Candra Wijaya and Tontowi Ahmad.

Kido’s younger brother, Bona Septano, said Kido had high blood pressure for a long time, but his condition worsened a few days before he died. Kido had been checking his condition with his doctor and was taking medicine regularly.

“My mother had asked him to stay home because of his condition. But Uda (Kido’s nickname) said he was okay because it was fun to meet friends. Finally, my mother allowed him to go,” said Bona Septano.

The 2000 Sydney Olympic men’s doubles gold medalist, Candra Wijaya was at the scene and witnessed the whole incident.

“I sat on the sidelines and saw Kido fell. I immediately ran to help. He was unconscious,” said Wijaya.

Wijaya then drove Kido to the Omni Hospital in Alam Sutra, Tangerang. Despite that effort, they still couldn’t save his life.

Wijaya paid tribute to Kido by posting some of the last moments of Kido before the tragedy struck. Kido was playing a men’s doubles match at that time and the score was at 15-8.
