Aarhus: China’s Uber Cup team sent its strongest women’s singles line-up but decided to try out new women’s doubles combinations in Sunday’s tie against Malaysia.
Chen Yufei, He Bingjiao, and Wang Zhiyi won their women’s singles matches respectively against Eoon Qi Xuan, Siti Nurshuhaini, and Karupathevan Letshanaa.
In the women’s doubles matches, Liu Xuan Xuan/Xia Yu Ting defeated Lee Meng Yean/Thinaah Muralitharan 21-12, 21-17 and Huang Dong Ping/Jia Yi Fan needed only 34 minutes to dispatch Go Pei Kee/Teoh Mei Xing 21-9, 21-12.
Malaysia will play Canada on Monday while China will take on Denmark on Tuesday to determine the champions and runners-up of Group D.
Meanwhile, in the Uber Cup Group B tie between Indian and Spain, India’s 2012 Londo Olympics bronze medalist – Saina Nehwal was forced to retire due to injury after losing the first game to Spain’s Clara Azurmendi 20-22.
However, Malvika Bansod leveled the score for India as she dished out a dominant 21-13, 21-15 win over Spain’s former World No. 20 Beatriz Corrales in the second women’s singles match.
Tanisha Crasto/Rutaparna Panda then gave India a 2-1 lead by beating Paula Lopez/Lorena Uslé in the first women’s doubles match 21-10, 21-8 before 18-year-old Aditi Bhatt then sealed India’s win with a straight-game victory against Ania Setien 21-16, 21-14.
However, India’s 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallists N Sikki Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa couldn’t finish the tie for India on a high when they lost 18-21, 21-14, 17-21 in the second women’s doubles match to Clara Azurmendi/Beatriz Corrales.
