Basel: Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi qualified for the second round of the 2022 Swiss Open as the World No. 11 men’s pair from Malaysia wrapped up the Day 2 proceeding with a 21-19, 17-21, 21-17 win over Christo Popov/Toma Junior Popov of France on Wednesday.
Ong/Teo will play Alexander Dunn/Adam Hall of Scotland next.
In addition to Ong/Teo, two other Malaysian men’s pairs – World No. 8 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, and World No. 18 Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin also made the second round.
Chia/Soh will meet Bokka Navaneeth/Reddy B. Sumeeth of India while Goh/Izzuddin will meet Jeppe Bay/Lasse Mølhede of Denmark in the second round.
Meanwhile, two of last week’s All England men’s doubles finalists were sent packing from the Swiss Open on Wednesday. The 2022 All England champions and World No. 21 Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana, couldn’t hold on to their 11-7 lead in the decider and were defeated by World No. 7 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty of India 21-17, 11-21, 18-21.
Another Indonesian men’s pair – the 2022 All England runners-up Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan lost their first-round battle to compatriots Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin 12-21 and decided to give up the match by retiring from the second game.
The men’s singles category saw Malaysia’s World No. 46 men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong was untroubled in the opener, seeing off Fabian Roth of Germany 21-16, 21-15 to set up a second-round face-off with World No. 8 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia on Thursday.
In the women’s doubles category, both Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien and Anna Cheong Ching Yik/Teoh Mei Xing of Malaysia have cruised into the second round.
Hoo/Lim will take on compatriots Low Yeen Yuan/Valeree Siow while Cheong/Teoh are set to face Debora Jille/Cheryl Seinen of the Netherlands in the last 16.
