Chenzhou: Malaysian independent player Cheam June Wei strengthened his impressive record at the Lin Dan Cup Badminton Open by capturing his fourth title in three years.
Cheam defeated China’s defending champion Zhao Jun Peng 15-3, 9-15, 15-13 in the 2026 Chenzhou Lin Dan Cup men’s singles final on Sunday.

The Malaysian earned RMB200,000 for the victory, taking his total prize money from Lin Dan Cup events to RMB900,000, equivalent to approximately RM542,970.
Cheam June Wei Survives Three-Game Final
Cheam made an outstanding start against Zhao, controlling the opening game and conceding only three points on the way to a dominant 15-3 win.
Zhao responded strongly in the second game. The defending champion increased the pressure, disrupted Cheam’s rhythm and won 15-9 to force a decider.
The final game developed into a close contest, with both players remaining within reach of the championship. Cheam stayed composed during the decisive rallies and edged the game 15-13 to secure another Lin Dan Cup crown.

Four Lin Dan Cup Titles in Three Years
Cheam’s success in Chenzhou continued a remarkable run at the Lin Dan Cup, where he has now won four tournaments since 2024.
His first championship came at the Shenzhen event in June 2024, when he defeated China’s Ren Cheng Ming in the final and collected RMB200,000.
Three months later, Cheam won again in Macau. He overcame another Chinese opponent, Zhou Ze Qi, and earned RMB300,000, his largest individual prize from the competition.
At last year’s Jincheng tournament, the Malaysian defeated China’s Wu Kai An to become the first player in Lin Dan Cup history to win three titles. That victory added another RMB200,000 to his earnings.
His latest championship in Chenzhou brought another RMB200,000 and raised his overall Lin Dan Cup winnings to RMB900,000.

Zhao entered the final as the defending champion and one of the tournament’s most successful players, but Cheam denied him a fifth crown after a tense deciding game.
For Cheam, the result further underlined his consistency in the tournament’s shorter 15-point format, where a fast start and the ability to handle pressure are particularly important.

The 2026 Chenzhou Lin Dan Cup featured one of the strongest fields in the competition’s history.
