Qingdao: The defending champions, China, secured a 3-2 victory over Hong Kong, advancing to the semifinals to face Japan.

The Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC), established in 2017, saw Japan claim the inaugural title. Since then, China has won the next two titles, with this year’s event marking their third consecutive appearance as defending champions. In today’s quarterfinals, China faced a tough challenge from Hong Kong, dropping points in both mixed doubles and women’s doubles, but ultimately secured a 3-2 win, marking their third straight semifinal appearance.

The first match saw China make a tactical change, opting to field Bao Lijing and Li Hongyi in mixed doubles against Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man/Ng Tsz Yau. However, the Chinese pairing’s strategy didn’t yield the desired result, as the young duo fell in just 36 minutes, losing 10-21, 15-21.

Next, Chen Yufei stepped up to the challenge, facing Hong Kong’s Saloni Samirbhai Mehta. The world number 11, Chen, dominated the match, winning comfortably 21-7, 21-8 in just 30 minutes, leveling the score at 1-1 for China.

In the men’s singles, 18-year-old Hu Zhe’an, the Asian and World Junior Champion, faced world number 21
Lee Cheuk Yiu. In a hard-fought 70-minute battle, Hu triumphed 17-21, 21-7, 21-18, putting China ahead 2-1.

The fourth match saw a thrilling women’s doubles encounter, where China’s Keng Shuliang and Wang Tingge took on Hong Kong’s world number 13 duo Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam. The Chinese pair lost after a tight battle, with Hong Kong winning 21-16, 18-21, 21-18, bringing the overall score to 2-2.

In the final match, China’s Chen Xujun and Huang Di clinched the decisive point with a 21-12, 21-15 victory over Hong Kong’s Law Cheuk Him and Yeung Shing Choi, ensuring China’s 3-2 win and a semifinal clash with Japan.

In other quarterfinal action, Indonesia defeated Chinese Taipei 3-0, taking wins in mixed doubles, men’s singles, and women’s singles. Indonesia will now face Thailand in the semifinals, after Thailand’s 3-2 victory over South Korea.

Since the tournament’s inception in 2017, this marks Indonesia’s return to the semifinals for the first time since 2019. In 2023, Indonesia failed to reach the top four.
