Jakarta: Defending champion Anders Antonsen’s campaign at the 2025 Indonesia Masters came to an abrupt end in the first round. The Danish second seed failed to capitalize on his opening-game win, succumbing to Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long in three sets, 21-18, 18-21, 15-21, at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Antonsen’s loss makes him the highest-seeded men’s singles player to exit in the opening round.

Another seeded casualty in the first round was Chinese Taipei’s seventh seed Chou Tien Chen, who lost to compatriot Chi Yu Jen in a three-game thriller, 17-21, 21-19, 15-21.

Angus Ng Ka Long will face Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei in the Round of 16. Wang advanced with a dominant 21-12, 21-12 win over China’s Lei Lanxi. Meanwhile, Chi Yu Jen will take on China’s Weng Hong Yang, who defeated Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao 21-14, 21-13 in just 45 minutes.

Strong Start for Chinese Contingent
China’s men’s singles players had a strong showing, with four of their five representatives advancing to the next round. Top seed Shi Yuqi and fifth seed Li Shifeng both secured straight-sets victories, with Shi defeating India’s Ayush Shetty 21-19, 21-19 and Li beating Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan 21-16, 21-12.

Lu Guang Zu staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia Hao 8-21, 21-13, 21-16. He will next face Thailand’s fourth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn for a place in the quarterfinals.

Indonesia’s third seed Jonatan Christie and Japan’s sixth seed Kodai Naraoka also advanced to the second round, maintaining strong performances.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin delivered impressive performances to reach the second round.

Top seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei cruised past France’s Julien Maio/Lea Palermo 21-14, 21-17, while Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin overcame Hong Kong’s Lui Chun Wai and Fu Chi Yan by the same scoreline.

In the Round of 16, Chen and Toh will face Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Pasaribu, while Hoo and Cheng take on India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto.

However, Malaysia’s professional mixed doubles pair Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien fell in the first round, losing to Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito 13-21, 15-21.
