Kuala Lumpur: The World No. 5 men’s pair from Malaysia – Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik who ended a 45-year wait for Malaysia at the badminton World Championships by winning the men’s doubles gold at the 2022 World Championships in Tokyo on August 28, 2022, were awarded a total cash prize of RM500,000 on Wednesday.

At the award ceremony, the president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Mohamad Norza Zakaria said that each of them would receive RM250,000.

“We hope that Aaron and Wooi Yik’s achievement would become an inspiration for our young players to work hard and one day could become a top-five player in the world,” said Zakaria.

“I also announce that Aaron and Wooi Yik have extended their contract with BAM until 2024. They will continue to give their best to represent the country for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” added Zakaria.

Soh Wooi Yik said the incentive was a big motivation for them to secure a spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“We never thought about winning the World Championships. But now, after the breakthrough, we will work hard for the Paris Olympics,” said Soh.

Meanwhile, Chia said they would like to win more championships at the BWF World Tour events.

“We haven’t won a World Tour title yet, but we hope we can start winning the World Tour title,” said Chia.
