Hochiminh City: Malaysia’s former two-time world junior champion – Goh Jin Wei has advanced to the final of the 2022 Vietnam Open on Saturday.
The current World No. 50 women’s singles player was made to work by World No. 217 Thi Phuong Thuy Tran of Vietnam in the semi-finals, before beating the World No. 217 Vietnamese 12-21, 21-17, 21-14.
Although Goh has participated in 9 international tournaments so far this year, this would be her first final in more than a year after losing the 2021 Spanish International final to compatriot Kisona Selvaduray in June last year.
The 22-year-old Goh will play World No. 58 Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam in the final.
In the men’s singles semi-final match that took place at Nguyen Du Stadium, in Hochiminh City, Malaysia’s World No. 67 Cheam June Wei couldn’t go far when he lost to World No. 140 Sun Fei Xiang of China at 11-21, 17-21. Sun will play World No. 28 Kodai Naraoka of Japan in the final.
The men’s doubles semi-finals also saw Malaysia’s No. 3 seeds Junaidi Arif/Muhammad Haikal knocked out by No. 2 seeds He Ji Ting/Zhou Hao Dong of China 17-21, 14-21. He/Zhou will meet compatriots, the No. 4 seeds Ren Xiang Yu/Tan Qiang in the final.
Indonesia squad has guaranteed the mixed doubles title when two Indonesian pairs – No. 1 seeds Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati will clash with their teammates, the No. 4 seeds Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in the final.
Meanwhile, Benyapa Aimsaard/Nuntakarn Aimsaard of Thailand will battle Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi of Indonesia for a chance to win the women’s doubles title.
