Hochiminh City: World No. 50 Goh Jin Wei couldn’t break her four-year championship drought on Sunday when she was defeated by World No. 58 Thuy Linh Nguyen in the 2022 Vietnam Open final.
Goh went down to Nguyen in straight-set 15-21, 13-21 in 32 minutes.
The last time Goh won any international tournaments was in 2018, in which she claimed her second World Junior Championships title and also clinched the Youth Olympic Games gold.
In men’s singles, after finishing runner-up in the 2022 Korea Masters, 2022 Singapore Open, and 2022 Taipei Open, World No. 28 Kodai Naraoka finally picked up his first title of the season by overcoming Sun Fei Xiang of China 10-21, 21-14, 21-17 in 75 minutes.
Despite the disappointment in the men’s singles, the China team has at least something to celebrate when the men’s doubles No. 4 seeds Ren Xiang Yu/Tan Qiang pulled off an upset to down compatriots, the No. 2 seeds He Ji Ting/Zhou Hao Dong 17-21, 21-18, 21-8 to win their first title of the year.
Meanwhile, in an all-Indonesian mixed doubles final, the No. 4 seeds Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja outlasted Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati 21-13, 21-18.
The women’s doubles final saw No. 1 seeds from Thailand, Benyapa Aimsaard/Nuntakarn Aimsaard lived up to their billing by fighting off a spirited challenge from Indonesian pair, Febriana Dwi Puji Kusuma/Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi 21-16, 27-25 to take home the women’s doubles crown.
