Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s World No. 2 Lee Zii Jia will participate in the Australian Open which will be held in Sydney from November 15 to November 20.
Lee’s team manager, who is also his sister, Lee Zii Yii made that announcement on Wednesday.
“We have confirmed that Zii Jia will compete at the Australian Open,” said Lee Zii Yii in a WhatsApp message released to the media. “He will try to do his best and hope to achieve a good result.”
Lee Zii Yii had previously said that they were not able to decide about Lee Zii Jia’s participation in Sydney and they were still in the process of applying for the visa which was a bit complicated.
Lee made the final of the Denmark Open on October 23rd, before losing to Shi Yuqi 18-21, 21-16, 12-21. However, he lost to Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia in the French Open first round and decided to withdraw from the Hylo Open in Germany citing personal reasons.
Lee Zii Jia has won two titles this season – the Badminton Asia Championships in Manila, Philippines where he defeated Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, 21-17, 23-21. He also won the Thailand Open in Bangkok which saw him beat China’s Li Shi Feng 17-21, 21-11, 23-21 in one hour and 10 minutes.
