Bangkok: Even though Lee Chong Wei is he is serving a provisional suspension from Badminton World Federation (BWF), he participated in the “Glory to the King” badminton invitational event in honour of the Thai King’s 87th birthday.
The 32-year-old Malaysian was originally scheduled to play an exhibition match against long-time rival Lin Dan of China at the event to celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday, instead, was replaced by Thai favourite Boonsak Ponsana. Lin eventually dispatched Ponsana in straight sets 21-15, 21-10.
The other two matches of the day were mixed doubles where world number 4 Indonesia’s Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad defeated Thailand’s Kunchala Voravichitchaikul and Songphon Anugritayawon 21-13, 17-21 and 21-17; while world number two men’s doubles Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan of Indonesia powered past Thailand’s Bodin Issara and Pakkawat Vilailak in three sets with 21-19, 15-21, 21-19.
