Kuala Lumpur: Despite losing the last two matches, Cheras BC managed to hang on to pull off a 12-10 victory over Nusajaya BC on Saturday.
In the first men’s singles match, former All-England champion Muhd Hafiz Hashim of Cheras BC continued his stunning revival under the 11-point scoring system when he knocked out world number 17 Boonsak Ponsana 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9 in 47 minutes.
Cheras extended their lead to 6-2 after women’s singles shuttler from Thailand Sarita Suwanakijboriharn trashed former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) international Julia Wong Pei Xian in straight sets 11-6,11-7,11-9.
Next, Cheras’ men’s doubles of Muhammad Hafiz Hashim/Zakry Abd Latif and mixed doubles Markus Gideon/Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth produced 3-2,3-0 victories over Hoon Thien How/Lim Khim Wah and Cheam June Wei/Lim Pek Siah of Nusajaya to give Cheras a commanding 12-4 lead.
Nevertheless, Chong Yee Han of Nusajaya fought back to defeat Mohd Shakier Ruhaizad 11-7,11-4,11-9 in the second men’s singles match, while Chang Hun Pin/Kuan Beng Hong outlasted Ng Sun Ly/Razif Abd Latif of Cheras 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 in the second men’s doubles match.
The second Purple League match on Saturday was played between star-studded teams of Kepong BC featuring badminton stars like Goh Soon Huat, Tee Jing Yi, Ow Yao Han, Tan Boon Heong and Chong Wei Feng while Klang United BC featuring stars like Simon Santoso, and Derek Wong Zi Liang.
Kepong BC eventually fought back from an early 0-2 deficit to post a 14-5 comeback winner against Klang United BC.
There will be two Purple League’s ties played on Sunday, they are Bangsar Hawks BC vs Muar City BC at 2pm Malaysia time and Serdang BC vs Petaling BC at 6pm Malaysia time.
