Kuala Lumpur: Top Malaysian women’s singles shuttler and world number 54 Yang Li Lian of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has decided to call it quits from the badminton court to pursue her studies at a local university in Malaysia on Thursday.
Yang Li Lian has been a straight-A student in all the major examinations in Malaysia. She scored 7As in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and 9As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). She put her study on hold two years ago when she decided to give badminton a serious try. Unfortunately her badminton career continued to be stagnant and she realized it’s hard for her to get any further breakthrough on the court.
Yang Li Lian admitted she had thought about quitting badminton few times, but had determined to keep playing after her coach Wong Tat Meng convinced her to stay.
When asked about this, Wong Tat Meng agreed Yang Li Lian’s retirement has hurt Malaysia’s preparation for the SEA Games and Sudirman Cup, but he nevertheless wish Yang Li Lian all the best in her future venture.
