Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia shuttler Daren Liew finally achieved the breakthrough he badly desired after putting up a stunning show to beat fifth seed Emil Holst of Denmark to win the 41st Polish Open men’s singles title.
It’s taken Daren Liew 3 years after he lifted the 2012 French Open title to triumph at another international tournament, but it was better late than never. Daren needed only 34 to sprint past Emil Holst 21-15, 21-11 on Saturday.
“Today’s match was easier than expected, I gained a lot of confidence after winning the first set,” said Daren.
“This win definitely provided a timely boost to me,” added Daren.
Meanwhile, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying registered a landmark victory for Malaysia in mixed doubles final, not only this was their first international title after winning the 2012 Malaysian Open GP Gold, but they also exhibited great determination and resilience to fight from behind when trailing 18-20 in the first set, seeing off the stubborn Akshay Dewalkar/Pradnya Gadre of India 28-26. In the second set, the Malaysian pair shrugged off their slow start, rebounded from 8-14 to eventually roll past Akshay Dewalkar/Pradnya Gadre 21-18 to win their long-awaited international title.
