Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Lee Chong Wei refused to delve into detail regarding his doping hearing with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Saturday but made it clear he is eager to move on with his career.
Chong Wei, who returned to Malaysia this morning, was visibly upbeat as he addressed reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and said he was relieved the hearing was done with.
The former World No 1, represented by renowned sports lawyer Mike Morgan, had appeared before a three-member independent panel from BWF in Amsterdam.
“I have cooled down a bit since the hearing. I had waited six months for it (hearing) and now all we have to do is wait another three weeks for the result,” said Chong Wei.
“Obviously, I am hoping for a good result. I am quite happy with our lawyer (Morgan) as he gave a clear and detailed presentation.
“I cannot say more than that (about hearing), we will just have to wait for the panel to decide.
“My focus in the next three weeks will be on training and I expect to start tomorrow.”
Chong Wei tested positive for the banned substance dexamethasone, a corticosteroid which inhibits inflammation, after his semifinal win over Denmark’s Victor Axelsen in the World Championships in Copenhagen on Aug 30. His `B’ urine sample also tested positive in November in Oslo.
A lighter sentence could still see the 10-time Malaysian Open champion qualifying for the Rio Olympics next year. He, however, told the BBC in January that he would call time on his career if he is slapped with the two-year maximum.
The two-time Olympic silver medallist has been provisionally suspended by BWF since November and has since slipped to No 17 in the world rankings.
